7 a.m., I’m standing in the middle of a field of bracken, the sun isn’t up yet, it’s foggy and all I can hear is the roar of unseen Stags coming from all directions…this is what nature and wildlife photography is all about…! Go back an hour and a half, it’s 5:30 a.m. and my alarm has just gone off. A little voice in my head says ‘roll over, go back to sleep’, I’m so glad I ignored it…

Well, not too much luck with capturing the action of the rut as yet…I’ve only witnessed a couple of minor scraps. But, I am having a great time getting shots of the deer in varying light/weather conditions whilst looking for the fights.

Yes…the roar of the male, the clashing of antlers and the worry of being charged by accidentally stumbling across one hidden in the bracken…the deer rut is upon us. I visited my local park in the hope of capturing the action. It appears we are a tad early though, so I had to settle for this Stag who had just bathed himself in a mostly muddy pond.

The foxes usually turn up at 7:45pm on the dot…this time they arrived so early they were watching us…! It’s only been a week but the opportunties and quality of the shots we could get has improved massively.

A 654 mile drive door to door to spend the week in a cottage with the sea at the bottom of the garden, was it worth it? oh yes…

Lets be honest…no photo taken at ISO 25600, f4 at 600mm with a shutter reading in the viewfinder of LO is going to be ‘good’. In fact when viewing these at %100 my reaction was along the lines of ‘bluuurrggghhh’. However, the fact the D3 could lock focus when I myself was even finding it hard to make out the foxes is something to be impressed by and has allowed me to capture the first shots in what will hopefully become a successful project to photograph foxes in the wild.

Sea eagles, otters, seals, scenery and a stand off with a highland cow…plus rain, wind, fog and sun…all before lunch time! How could any photographer not want to visit Mull…

I’ve always said no in the past…now I’ve done one, is my mind swayed…?
Since being a guest with camera at a friends wedding during 2007 I’ve had several other friends see the results and ask if I would be the official photographer for them. I’ve always given the answer as a polite ‘no’, after all, I’ve never really done one before so I’d basically be using their big day as practice, surely that can’t be a good idea…can it?!
